Euro Contrôle Route and TISPOL continue to target digital tachograph fraud

For Euro Contrôle route and TISPOL the enforcement of driver’s hours rules and more particularly the digital tachograph has always been a staple of the cooperation.
 

A joint working group, the TWG group, brings together experts from the police and inspectorates to exchange information, train enforcement staff and raise awareness of the problem with both the industry and policy makers.
On September 11th , experts from the Belgian, Dutch and German police and inspectorates conducted a joint roadside check on the motorway Liège-Brussels.

The European Commission, DG-MOVE, Land Transport policy’s directorate visited the roadside check to see firsthand the challenges enforcers at the roadside face on a daily basis. The guests from the Commission as well a representatives from the Industry, International Road union (IRU), were guided through a roadside check from start to finish.

During the check twenty-seven (27) lorries were stopped, nineteen (19) domestic vehicles and eight (8) foreign vehicles. Eight cases of (digital) tachograph fraud were found. This means that one in three of the vehicles checked were manipulating the tachograph by  using a magnet or electronic device (6) or driving with someone else’s driver card (2).
In addition to the frauds, fines were issued for poor maintenance on breaks and tyres, insufficient daily rest and a defective tachograph. In one case the state of the brake discs was so poor that the enforcement staff in addition to the fine issued a driving ban until such time the brake discs had been replaced.
